Crosstown on the L (Jane's Walk 2022)

The L train has a long and fascinating history that can be traced back to a steam railroad that began operating in 1865. The original route was incorporated into the Brooklyn Rapid Transit Company’s elevated service in 1906 and later evolved as part of the subway expansion effort that started in 1913. Also known as the Fourteenth St- Canarsie local, the line currently travels from 8th Avenue and 14th Street in Manhattan to Rockaway Parkway in Canarsie, Brooklyn. The story of the line's construction is not without controversies, but its development was ultimately propelled forward by enterprising individuals.
