12:30 PM  –  1:30 PM

Debuted at The World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, The City Beautiful movement flourished during the 1890s and 1900s, revolutionizing urban planning in select American cities. Guided by the belief that beautification and grandeur in city design should encourage civic pride and engagement, architects, artists, and city planners worked together to beautify and uplift urban neighborhoods. In New York City, prominent individuals such as William Barclay Parsons, George Heins and Christopher Lafarge set about designing a transit system that was both functional and embodied the ideals of the movement.

Join Museum Educator Danaleah Schoenfuss for a digital discussion about the impact of the City Beautiful movement on New York’s transportation systems. Learn about the evolution of the movement and discover the magnificent art and architecture that adorn the city’s transportation hubs.
