The Staten Island Railway (SIR), formerly known as Staten Island Rapid Transit, was incorporated in 1851 and has been an important method of transit for local residents since it began operation. It is unique within the New York City transit system as the only major subway line that does not run between boroughs. The Staten Island Railway evolved over the years through the work of various individuals and company mergers, including one with the MTA in 1971 which led to its revitalization after a period of low ridership.
