Straphangers Lounge: Finding Inspiration in the Every Day

This event is no longer on sale.

Thursday May 18

6:00 PM  –  7:00 PM

Subway cars have been constructed from wood and steel, and now….fabric and yarn? The Straphangers Lounge is a creative collaboration between fiber artists Karima Sundarji and Sue Hunter. Noticing the mosaic motifs in New York City’s subway system, they realized that the tiled grids looked like knitting patterns and were inspired to create their own handcrafted versions. Their project soon evolved into recreating an entire subway train and other station artifacts into textiles, using knitting, quilting, and needlepoint techniques. Now operating as an interactive mobile installation, the Straphangers Lounge serves as both an art gallery and maker space.

In this program, Sundarji and Hunter will lead you through their process, showcase some of their works, and share examples of how they turn everyday inspiration into creative expression.
