Express Train to the Afterworld
How do you get to New York City’s cemeteries? From a ferry ride to Green-Wood in Brooklyn in the 19th century to a special train route to Woodlawn in the Bronx in the early 20th century, the pathways to the grave have changed. We’ll explore the relationship between tombs and transit and look at transportation-related curios, such as a mausoleum with steps modeled after Penn Station and a lavishly sculpted train crash memorial.
Join Allison Meier, art and culture writer and cemetery tour guide, for a digital discussion that uncovers the relationship between cemeteries and public transportation in New York City. We’ll also consider transit to cemeteries in other cities, such as the London Necropolis Railway, and the impact of events like Abraham Lincoln's Funeral Train on transit and our rituals of mourning.
