West Side Subway Story

Friday November 18

2:00 PM  –  3:00 PM

The IRT West Side Improvement Project was the first major infrastructure and route renewal effort undertaken from 1957 and 1959 by the newly formed Transit Authority. This extensive project focused mainly on rebuilding platforms, modifying station access, and revising train service patterns along the 1 train route to improve and significantly speed subway service on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

Join transit historian and CUNY professor, Andy Sparberg, for an in-depth examination into the story behind this intensive and successful improvement project—including a look at subsequent upgrades that are still in use today.
